The Gemsbok, or South African Oryx, is supremely adaped to the arid regions of Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It can survive weeks without water due to a slow metabolism and an ability to extract water from a variety of plants and roots. A Gemsbok's horns can reach 1.2m in length and the animal has been known to use these rapier-like weapons to kill attacking lions.
